The MEF Global Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) event in Dallas, TX, held during October 28-30, 2024, brought together industry leaders to explore the future of NaaS. The event underscored the industry’s commitment to creating secure, scalable, and customer-centric network solutions. Below are the key highlights, shedding light on innovations that are set to transform the networking landscape.

Milestones in SASE Certification

MEF’s SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) certification program, launched in 2023, has rapidly expanded, with 15 providers progressing through certification. This development represents a major industry leap toward secure and efficient network service standards, bolstering the framework for enhanced cloud networking.

NaaS Adoption: Insights from the Field

Stephen Thomas of Frost & Sullivan shared perspectives on effective NaaS adoption, highlighting the following:

  • Advanced Observability: Enhanced monitoring and simplified ordering are enabling near-instant deployment for select network components, transforming customer onboarding experiences.
  • Customer Journey Optimization: Combining strong customer support with seamless digital engagement, blending in-person and online interactions to create a frictionless experience.
  • Cloud Security Integration: An effective combination of cloud interconnectivity with CASB (Cloud Access Security Broker) services to boost Multi-Cloud Networking (MCN) offerings.

AI’s Transformative Role in NaaS

Artificial intelligence, including generative AI, is reshaping the NaaS landscape. Applications include:

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): Simplifying order management and billing inquiries to streamline service delivery.
  • Enhanced Network Reliability: Leveraging AI for predictive monitoring, automating management, and strengthening network performance.

In a nod to popular culture, one operator likened telecom’s journey to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour—each era representing a step in the evolution of network technology and customer experience in 2024.

Revolutionizing Provisioning with LSO APIs

MEF’s Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO) application programming interfaces (APIs) are enabling faster, more efficient service provisioning. A prominent LSO API adopter now boasts, 40% of orders are processed via LSO APIs, reducing lead times by half — from two months to just one.. Console Connect’s launch of an open-source LSO API adapter is also significant, allowing for collaborative, continuous API enhancements.

Smart Contracts and Blockchain Innovations

Blockchain is playing an integral role in managing settlements, SLAs, and service orders through smart contracts, introducing new levels of trust and transparency. This evolution in business practices is fostering streamlined operations among vendors, partners, and enterprises.

Wholesale NaaS Adoption Leading the Way

NaaS adoption has gained significant traction in the wholesale sector, where high-volume transactions and concentrated stakeholders make it viable. Broader enterprise adoption may require longer cycles, but those ready to embrace NaaS stand to gain a competitive edge through network service digitization.

Reflections and Forward-Looking Perspectives

NaaS is advancing rapidly, and while complete enterprise adoption may take time, the vision is clear: agile, efficient, and customer-focused networking is the future. Enterprises that embrace the shift toward digital solutions will be well-positioned to lead in the evolving network services landscape.

Stephen Thomas of Frost & Sullivan had the privilege of presenting the 2024 MEF Award for “Best NaaS Vision Technology Provider,” with Amartus earning the accolade and setting the stage for future industry advancements.
