Conclusion

The expo emphasized the critical role of India’s automotive industry, which accounts for 7% of the country’s total GDP and ranks among the top five markets for passenger vehicles and construction equipment.

Our discussions with several industry participants at the expo revealed some of the major trends that will define the market in the coming years.  One of the key themes was that OEMs are now looking alternate fuels along with electric technology such as, for example, “Ethanol+Electric”.  Citing evolving consumer preferences in India, industry participants said that the application of such electric-cum-alternative fuel vehicles as plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) might become a game changer. This potent combination of alternate fuels with electric technologies will have a direct impact on the ability to achieve regulatory compliance with CO2 norms and will work in favor of OEMs. However, their success will hinge on government policies and OEM plans aligning.

Another interesting theme emerging from our interactions with attendees and exhibitors was the increasing importance of vehicle electrification – OEMs’ EV brands and models were front and center at the expo. Indeed, the glitzy launches indicated that EVs are now being promoted as first cars rather than as second, complementary cars to conventional ICE vehicles.  This shift in perspective is set to reshape the Indian market.

As the industry transitions toward electric and alternative fuel vehicles and with the Indian EV market set to grow 8 times by 2030, Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 provided a vision of a future powered by sustainable mobility solutions. Indeed, the major takeaway for us was the growing number of OEMs focused on developing cost-competitive, mass-market EVs comparably priced to conventional equivalents.
