The lack of waste management infrastructure coupled with changing consumption and waste generation patterns are presenting challenges as well as opportunities in the waste management sector in Nepal.

As part of the smart cities plan, Nepal has the investment potential of $83 million in municipal waste management. Delegation of power to local governments and move towards implementation of smart city projects encourage the entry of waste management service providers and technology/equipment vendors into Nepali waste management market. Increasing internet penetration and escalating mobile use further encourage the activities of waste entrepreneurs deploying services through digital platforms in the country.
